Holiday Joy places special emphasis on children, not only as recipients but also as active participants in the program. One of the most meaningful aspects of Holiday Joy is the opportunity it provides for children to get involved and develop a sense of empathy and generosity. By participating, young volunteers learn firsthand the values of compassion and giving back to their community.

A key partner in this effort has been Toys for Tots, whose contributions are instrumental to the program’s success. The organization depends on donations from the community, and many families use this as a teaching moment, encouraging their own children to contribute and experience the joy of giving.
Other organizations also play vital roles. For example, Northaven Preschool Cooperative holds an annual toy drive for VMNA, with their students donating brand-new toys. They also run a food drive for our pantry prior to Thanksgiving.
Parents bring their children to help as “elves,” allowing them to volunteer together. These young helpers have the chance to interact directly with the children who receive the gifts, making the experience even more rewarding for everyone involved.
The success of the Holiday Joy project continues to grow each year, reflecting the dedication and compassion of everyone involved. In the most recent season, the program was able to serve 1,535 children from 578 families. Gift bags were filled with a variety of wonderful items, ensuring that every child received something special and memorable.
In return for their hard work, volunteers are rewarded not just with words of thanks, but also with heartfelt hugs and the shared joy of witnessing children’s happiness. These moments of gratitude and connection highlight the true spirit of Holiday Joy, creating lasting memories for both the recipients and those who give their time and energy to the program.
In addition to those mentioned above, VMNA and St. Katharine Drexel Community Closet would also like to recognize Fossil for their donations, ALA (Dallas Lighting Company) for their toy and coat drive, Alma Smeltzer for handcrafting over 100 infant quilts and our generous volunteers for their time and hundreds of soccer balls, games and stuffed animals.
